THE BOX-PACKING EXERCISE
Participants: dr Mirjana Devetakovic, Lazar Belic, Igor Sjeverac, Bojan Jovancevic, dr Daniel Lordick, Danilo Beronja and Milan Varga (missing on the photo).
The Box Packing is an exercise in creating an analogue cube consisting of 27 identical cuboid elements. In this case it has been initiated ad-hoc by dr Daniel Lordick (inspired by results of the course 3D Visual Communications, dr Mirjana Devetakovic, Faculty of Architecture, University of Belgrade), and built in the main aula of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Rijeka. The building elements are in fact the ambalage of computers found on site. The exercise is based on the Box packing algorythm, published within the Wolfram Demonstrations Project. Apart from its geometry side, this exercise has its ecological significance, because it deals with the used components that could be found almost everywhere. Recipe for a Box Packing Exercise
- Find 27 identical cuboid elements in your environment
- Estimate the space necessary for the future Box
- Identify appropriate place for the Box constructing
- Access the Box Packing Demonstration at the Wolfram Demonstration Project
- In the Box Packing Demonstrations enter the dimensions a, b and c of your chosen cuboid element
- Observe the model and construct the Box putting the cuboids together
- Check the stability of the form, glue or fix otherway if neccessary
- After constructing the Box, perform a photo-session
